A viral image appearing to show Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez wearing Argentina jerseys during the FIFA World Cup has been identified as fake after spreading widely across social media.
The image, which shows the couple seated in the stands wearing Argentina’s iconic blue-and-white shirts, quickly gained traction online, with many users believing Ronaldo had attended Argentina’s World Cup quarterfinal in support of the team.
Among those who appeared to believe the image was also Pakistani cricketer Abid Ali, who shared it on his X account with an emotional message praising Ronaldo.
Huge respect to @Cristiano
for showing up in Argentina's jersey to watch the World Cup quarterfinal… True sportsman spirit! That's why you're the 🐐. Love you, man! #CR7 #arg

However, fact-checkers later determined that the image is AI generated and not an authentic photograph of Ronaldo and Georgina. There is no credible evidence that Ronaldo attended an Argentina World Cup match wearing the country’s jersey.
The image attracted particular attention because of the long-running rivalry between Ronaldo and Argentina captain Lionel Messi.
For more than a decade, the two players competed at the highest level of European football, particularly during their time with Real Madrid and Barcelona. Their individual achievements have kept the debate over football’s greatest player alive among fans around the world.
Messi has won a record eight Ballon d’Or awards, compared with Ronaldo’s five. Ronaldo, meanwhile, is the UEFA Champions League’s all-time leading scorer, with 141 goals in the competition, while Messi is second with 129.
Messi also led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title, while Ronaldo captained Portugal to the UEFA European Championship in 2016. Despite constant comparisons between them, their rivalry has largely been driven by sporting records, awards and fan debates rather than any confirmed personal hostility.
The idea of Ronaldo publicly supporting Messi’s Argentina therefore appeared surprising enough to make the fabricated picture widely shareable.
