Punjab is currently experiencing a significant increase in cases of pink eye (conjunctivitis) as the monsoon rains continue to affect the region. On Tuesday alone, public hospitals reported 907 new cases of the infection within 24 hours.
The surge in cases has been observed across various districts in Punjab. Jhang reported the highest number of new cases, with 106 infections, followed by Multan with 93 cases. Bhakkar and DG Khan reported 83 and 41 cases, respectively. Lahore, the provincial capital, recorded 11 new cases within the same timeframe.
Over the past 30 days, a total of 13,473 cases have been reported in public hospitals across the province, highlighting the widespread nature of the outbreak.
Despite the current surge, the Punjab Health Department noted a 5 percent decrease in pink eye cases compared to the same period last year. In 2023, over 288,000 cases were reported from January to September, indicating a slightly improved situation this year.
Medical professionals are advising individuals who contract pink eye to self-isolate to prevent further spread of the infection. Additionally, health experts are emphasizing the importance of frequent hand washing as a preventive measure against the highly contagious condition.
The health department continues to monitor the situation closely and is urging the public to adhere to recommended health guidelines to mitigate the spread of conjunctivitis. As the monsoon season progresses, maintaining hygiene and taking preventive measures remain crucial in controlling the outbreak.
