The UK Government is set to address the issue of headlight glare, as confirmed by MP Lilian Greenwood in Parliament. She announced that research will be commissioned to investigate the causes of excessive headlight brightness and propose possible solutions.
This follows growing concerns from the public about the intensity of modern headlights. A recent Royal Automobile Club (RAC) survey revealed that 89% of drivers believe some vehicle headlights are too bright, and 91% experience discomfort from oncoming lights.
Despite advancements in headlamp technology, such as intelligent matrix systems that adjust brightness based on traffic, the issue persists. These systems are designed to reduce glare but are not always effective.
The RAC has highlighted that headlight glare contributes to approximately 280 road accidents annually. Various factors contribute to the problem, including the increased brightness of LED headlights compared to traditional halogen bulbs, the higher positioning of headlights on SUVs, and illegal aftermarket LEDs.
Rod Dennis, the RAC’s road safety spokesperson, supported the government’s decision to investigate the issue, noting that many drivers have raised concerns. He emphasized the need for a thorough examination to address what he described as a significant and growing problem affecting road safety.
The final report from the research will aim to identify effective countermeasures to mitigate headlight glare.
