Saudi Ministry Updates Rules for Photography in Masjid al-Haram

As the Grand Mosque in Mecca welcomes a growing number of Muslims for Umrah, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has reminded pilgrims about the rules regarding photography at the sacred site.

While many visitors wish to capture memories of their pilgrimage, authorities urge worshippers to be mindful of others and avoid disruptions. The ministry has emphasized that pilgrims should take photos quickly and refrain from photographing others engaged in prayer or without their permission.

It also advised against lingering too long while taking pictures to maintain the flow of worshippers around the Holy Kaaba. This year’s Umrah season began in late June, following the annual Hajj pilgrimage, which drew 1.8 million Muslims worldwide.

Last year, 13.5 million pilgrims performed Umrah, and Saudi Arabia aims to increase that number to 15 million next year. Saudi Arabia has introduced several measures to facilitate pilgrimage, including extending the Umrah visa from 30 to 90 days and allowing entry through multiple points by land, air, or sea.

Furthermore, women can now perform Umrah without a male guardian. Those with personal, visit, or tourism visas can also participate in Umrah and visit the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, provided they obtain an e-appointment for entry into Al Rawda Al Sharifa, the resting place of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).
