Nadeem Khan, the director of high performance at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), expressed confidence in the direction of cricket in Pakistan, acknowledging both the team’s potential and areas for improvement.
Speaking on a private news channel, Khan commented on the public’s frustration following Pakistan’s recent defeat against the United States in the T20 World Cup, stating that it was justified given the team’s prior successes.
He emphasized that strong domestic cricket is crucial for building a successful international side, noting that Pakistan’s domestic structure has faced challenges in the past two years.
Khan also introduced the upcoming Champions One-Day Cup, which will feature 150 top-performing players from the last three years.
He explained that household names in Pakistan cricket will act as mentors for the five participating teams, with each team closely connected to the national academy system.
Addressing concerns about the management of players, particularly fast bowlers, Khan admitted that the PCB had struggled to handle their workload effectively.
This mismanagement, he said, has led to several bowlers losing their rhythm upon returning to international cricket after injury and rehabilitation. He stressed the need for better planning to ensure players’ longevity and peak performance in the future.
Pakistan’s next assignment will be against England next month in a three-match Test series at home under newly appointed red-ball head coach Jason Gillespie. The Men in Green will then play an away series against Australia in three ODIs in November.
