AJK University Bans Students From Wearing Jeans and T-Shirts

The University of Azad Jammu & Kashmir (UAJK) has implemented a new dress code policy, prohibiting students from wearing T-shirts and jeans on campus. This decision, aimed at preserving the “dignity and sanctity” of the institution, was outlined in a circular issued on August 29, which recently came to public attention.

The circular mandates that both students and staff adhere to a dress code that aligns with local cultural and religious values. The AJK University emphasized that the policy is not intended to impose rigidity but to foster discipline, punctuality, and respect for religious matters.

Specific Dress Code Requirements:

  • Female Students: Required to wear shalwar kameez and a dupatta or gown.
  • Male Students: Expected to wear “decent dress,” defined as dress pants and collared shirts or shalwar kameez.

Prohibited Attire:

The AJK University has outlined specific clothing items and styles that are not permitted, including:

  • Tight or see-through clothing
  • Shorts or sleeveless shirts
  • T-shirts or clothing with provocative or indecent language or art
  • Torn clothing
  • Jogging or exercise attire during classes
  • Excessive makeup or expensive jewelry
  • Untidy, gaudy, or immodest dress in classrooms, cafeterias, and university offices
  • Unprofessional attire in formal programs and interviews
  • Clothing, accessories, hairstyles, body markings, or piercings that draw unnecessary attention
  • Explicit dresses
  • Sunglasses indoors
  • Hair must be clean and styled conservatively; long hair must be tied back
  • Bare feet are not allowed

The UAJK clarified that the dress code is designed to promote a positive image of the university while allowing flexibility to maintain good morale and respect for cultural and religious values. The policy also considers safety and decorum across all campuses.

Students have been advised to “strictly” adhere to the new rules, with the university warning that disciplinary action will be taken against violators.
