In a closely contested match at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad, the Shaheen Afridi-led Lions were penalized for a slow over-rate during their Champions One-Day Cup clash against the Dolphins.
Despite a narrow 16-run defeat, the Lions secured a playoff berth, ensuring their campaign continues in the Champions One-Day Cup.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced the fine in a press release, stating that the Lions were one over short of the required rate in their match on Sunday.
On-field umpires Faisal Aafreedi and Imtiaz Iqbal reported the infraction, leading to a five percent deduction from the match fees of all eleven players, following Article 2.22 of the PCB Code of Conduct.
The match was a thrilling encounter, with Lions’ all-rounder Khushdil Shah delivering a powerful half-century. However, it was Abbas Afridi’s composed performance that guided the Dolphins to a nail-biting victory in the final over.
Chasing a daunting target of 327, the Lions managed to reach 310-8 in their allotted 50 overs, achieving the necessary 260 runs to qualify for the playoffs by the 47th over.
Looking ahead, the Lions are set to face the Stallions in Wednesday’s eliminator, while the Markhors and Panthers will battle it out in Tuesday’s qualifier.
The Lions’ focus will now shift to overcoming their over-rate issues as they aim to advance further in the tournament.
