England Women’s Captain Fined and Suspended for Doing ‘Blackface’

Captain of the England Women’s cricket team, Heather Knight has been reprimanded by the Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) ahead of the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup after a 2012 photo of the cricketer in blackface went viral on social media.

The photo, taken at a “sports stars” themed fancy-dress party at a cricket club in Kent, has been deemed as racist and discriminatory conduct, resulting in a £1000 (Rs. 3.7 Lac) suspended fine.

According to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), the racist photo of Heather Knight violated directive 3.3. This directive prohibits conduct that may be prejudicial to the interests of cricket or bring the game or its players into disrepute. Knight, who was 21 at the time, accepted the charges, expressed remorse, and issued a public apology. She clarified that she did not post the photo on social media and has no control over its distribution.

In a statement released via the ECB, Knight said,

I’m truly sorry for the mistake I made in 2012. It was wrong, and I have long regretted it. Back then, I simply was not as educated as to the implications and consequences of my actions as I have become since. There was no ill-intent meant.

While the CDC acknowledged the absence of racist or discriminatory intent, it emphasized that the photo was “plainly prejudicial to the interests of cricket, brought the game and Ms Knight into disrepute, and undermined the ECB’s strategic objective of eradicating discrimination from the sport.” The £1000 fine is suspended for two years, contingent on Knight’s future conduct. This decision is specific to this case and is not intended to set a precedent.

The CDC took into account Knight’s cooperation, her participation in the Professional Cricketers’ Association’s Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion training in 2021, and her unpaid ambassadorial work promoting diversity and inclusion. This is the first time Knight has faced disciplinary proceedings.
