Vice President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Rajeev Shukla announced that the Indian government will make the final decision regarding the national cricket team’s participation in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan.
Shukla made these remarks during a media interaction at the second Test match between India and Bangladesh in Kanpur Stadium.
Shukla emphasized that the BCCI’s policy mandates government approval for international tours. “No decision has been taken yet,” he stated, underscoring that the government’s directive will be pivotal in determining whether the Indian team will travel to Pakistan.
This stance reflects the ongoing diplomatic sensitivities between the two nations, which have not engaged in a bilateral cricket series since 2008, following the Mumbai terror attacks.
The 2025 ICC Champions Trophy is slated to take place from February 19 to March 9, with matches scheduled in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi.
Lahore is set to host the final, while Karachi will see the opening match and one semi-final. The tournament will feature two groups: Group A includes Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and New Zealand, while Group B comprises England, South Africa, Australia, and Afghanistan.
This decision comes amid a backdrop of sporadic cricketing encounters between India and Pakistan, limited to ICC events, including Pakistan’s participation in the recent ODI World Cup in India.
The cricketing world now awaits the Indian government’s decision, which will significantly impact the tournament’s dynamics.
