Pakistan Hockey Vice-Captain Seeks Financial Support for Injury Treatment

Pakistan’s hockey player Abubakar Mahmood has voiced his frustration over the lack of support for his medical treatment for a knee injury sustained during the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy.

Despite being injured in a crucial group-stage match against India, Mahmood claims that neither the national authorities nor the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) have taken steps to facilitate his treatment.

The injury forced Mahmood to miss the semi-final, a significant blow to the team. PHF President Tariq Bugti had promised to arrange treatment for Mahmood, but sources indicate that no action has been taken.

Similarly, Rana Mashhood, Chairman of the Prime Minister Youth Programme, assured Mahmood via video call that his treatment would be arranged, yet no progress has been made since his return.

The PHF has cited financial constraints, advising Mahmood to initiate his treatment independently with a promise of reimbursement once funds are available. Mahmood, who serves as the vice-captain, is keen to undergo surgery abroad but lacks the necessary funds.

The delay in treatment has raised concerns about potential complications. PHF Secretary Rana Mujahid has stated that the federation is committed to Mahmood’s care, with plans for a medical checkup and possible overseas treatment.

Mujahid also mentioned that a letter has been sent to the prime minister requesting financial support for Mahmood’s treatment, expressing hope for swift action.
