Malaysia Appoints Pakistani Hockey Legend as Assistant Coach

In a remarkable development, the Malaysian national men’s field hockey team, affectionately known as the Speedy Tigers, has appointed Pakistani legend and drag-flick maestro Sohail Abbas as an assistant coach.

The announcement was made by Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) President Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal, who announced that the Pakistani great had signed on for one year, with an option to extend for another.

According to the MHC President, Sohail Abbas would not only be helping improve the team’s penalty corner effectiveness, but his immense experience would also allow for helping the Malaysian national side improve its overall performance.

While talking to the media at a press conference, the MHC President stated “We need an expert, especially in improving the sharpness of penalty corners.

Previously we had appointed Chris Ciriello, but he was not with us long due to other commitments. Sohail’s presence can improve the performance of the penalty corner takers as it translates into 30 to 40 to determine a team’s victory or defeat.

Renowned worldwide as the ‘King of the drag flick’, Sohail Abbas had a legendary 14-year career for Pakistan from 1998 to 2012, amassing a mammoth 348 goals in 311 appearances.

His first assignment as assistant coach will be at the Tun Abdul Razak Cup to be held in Johor Bahru, where he will scout budding new talents that may show potential for the Malaysian national side
