The Punjab government has taken significant steps to ensure the safety of motorcyclists by implementing strict measures in all universities and colleges. The government has specifically instructed these institutions to enforce a mandatory helmet rule for students and faculty members who ride motorcycles.
To enforce this new regulation, vice-chancellors (VCs) of universities have been directed to ban the entry of anyone violating the helmet rule. Additionally, penalties are expected to be introduced to guarantee compliance. Heads of government colleges across Punjab were also given similar directives, urging them to adopt strict measures against students and teachers who fail to comply.
In a more stringent move, the Punjab government has asked colleges to tie student attendance to adherence to the helmet rule. This means that students who do not wear helmets may not be marked present, providing a strong incentive for compliance.
A notification issued by the Punjab Higher Education Department further emphasizes that wearing helmets is now compulsory for all motorcyclists on campuses.
Universities and colleges have also been instructed to launch awareness campaigns about the importance of helmets. These campaigns should include announcements and lectures to educate students and faculty members on the critical role helmets play in reducing injuries and fatalities in traffic accidents.
Furthermore, strict surveillance will be implemented at the entry and exit points of these institutions. Motorcycle riders without helmets will be stopped at the gates, ensuring the rule is enforced consistently across all public sector universities and colleges.
