FIFA Launches Investigation Regarding Israel’s Discrimination Against Palestine

FIFA announced on Thursday that its disciplinary committee will review discrimination claims brought forward by the Palestinian Football Association (PFA). These allegations follow the PFA’s submission of a proposal in May to suspend Israel from world football at FIFA’s congress in Bangkok which took place in May.

The complaint alleges that the Israel Football Association (IFA) is involved in violations of international law by the Israeli government, discriminates against Arab players, and includes clubs from Palestinian territory in its league. The IFA has denied these claims. FIFA had planned to hold an extraordinary session of its governing council before July 20 to review an independent legal report and determine the next steps.

Although the original deadline was extended to allow legal experts more time to finalize their report, FIFA’s council reviewed and approved the recommendations and conclusions of the legal analysis during a meeting at the organization’s headquarters in Zurich on Thursday.

In a statement, the global body that governs the sport of football said “The FIFA Disciplinary Committee will be mandated to initiate an investigation into the alleged offence of discrimination raised by the Palestine Football Association. FIFA’s Governance, Audit and Compliance Committee will be entrusted with the mission to investigate the participation in Israeli competitions of Israeli football teams allegedly based in the territory of Palestine”

The PFA has reported that at least 92 Palestinian players have been killed in the ongoing conflict, with football infrastructure destroyed, leagues suspended, and the national team forced to play World Cup qualifiers abroad.

In its proposal, the PFA urged FIFA to impose appropriate sanctions on Israeli teams, including both the national squad and clubs alike.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated, “The FIFA Council has handled this highly sensitive issue with due diligence and, after careful evaluation, we have followed the recommendations of independent experts.”

He further emphasized the need for peace, saying, “The ongoing violence underscores, as we expressed at the 74th FIFA Congress, that peace is paramount. We are deeply shocked by the events and stand with those suffering. We call on all parties to immediately restore peace in the region.”
