Lionel Messi capped off a historic week by setting a new record by being the only player to become the all-time highest goalscorer for three different teams.
The Argentine star scored his second hat-trick in five days, leading Inter Miami to a 6-2 victory over New England Revolution.
This win secured the highest points total in MLS history, with 74 points. This wasn’t the only historic moment Messi contributed to in the final game of the regular season. By completing his 11-minute hat-trick in the 89th minute, the 37-year-old became Inter Miami’s all-time leading scorer with 33 goals.
Having already topped the scoring charts for both Barcelona and the Argentina national team, Messi is now the first player in history to be the top scorer for three different teams.
This achievement puts Messi ahead of his long-time rival Ronaldo, who holds the scoring record for two teams—Real Madrid and Portugal.
Ronaldo might feel a bit unlucky, as Messi arguably had an easier path to becoming Inter Miami’s top scorer. Since the club was only established in 2018, there hasn’t been as much time for anyone to establish a significant lead in their scoring ranks.
Messi’s closest competitor is teammate Leonardo Campana, who has scored 32 goals in 98 appearances since joining the team in January 2022.
