Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly close to naming a new white ball coach for the national team following the resignation of Gary Kirsten after just a few months into his job.
PCB has allegedly resiled its stance on foreign coaches and will look more inwards when confirming the next appointment with their international counterparts not working out for Pakistan cricket. Saqlain Mushtaq and Aaqib Javed are the two names that have been shortlisted as the next coach.
The off-spinner currently heads the competition due to his familiarity with the national team. He has also served at the PCB’s High-Performance Center for International Player Development and reportedly has the backing of new captain Mohammad Rizwan.
Aaqib, meanwhile, is riding high with PCB after helping Pakistan earn its first test series win at home in over three years. He already occupies a seat on the selection committee and is looking to consolidate his authority over the team with another title added to his resume. He also boasts a successful CV, having been at the helm of Lahore Qalandars’ two title wins.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi is expected to announce the decision soon after meeting with key stakeholders.
