Pakistan’s Athletic scene has become even more muddied with reports emerging that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has placed the National Anti-Doping Organization (NADO) of Pakistan on its “watch list” due to non-compliance with the International Standard for Code Compliance.
What is WADA’s Anti-Doping Code:
The World Anti-Doping Code (Code) aims to harmonize anti-doping policies, rules, and regulations within sports organizations and public organizations. The Code works in conjunction with eight International Standards with WADA overseeing the acceptance, implementation, and compliance of the Code.
In short, it is the guiding SOPs, revised in 2021, that all associated bodies are required to follow.
WADA has given Pakistan four months to resolve these outstanding issues. If NADO fails to make the necessary corrections within the specified timeframe, it could face disciplinary actions from the governing body.
Possible Sanctions:
If Pakistan fails to resolve the raised concerns in due time, its athletes face a ban from all sanctioned competitions including the Olympics and all associated games. With opportunities for local athletes already minuscule, NADO cannot be lackadaisical in correcting its course.
North Korea, El Salvador, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Sierra Leone, the Virgin Islands (U.S.), and Brazil among others have all previously faced the music and Pakistan would be wise to heed their warning.
