The smartphone industry has almost entirely moved towards smoother 120Hz refresh rate displays, including budget and even some entry-level phones. Everyone except Apple’s $699 and $799 iPhone 16 and 16 Plus have joined the party, but this may change next year.
A report from South Korean media ETNews suggests that all iPhone 17 models are expected to get LTPO displays. It doesn’t specifically mention ProMotion support or a 120Hz refresh rate, but LTPO panels are typically used to enable variable refresh rates between 1-120Hz for power saving.
LTPO, which is short for low-temperature polycrystalline oxide, is a back panel for OLED screens. It not only helps with variable refresh rates but also consumes less power than alternative display panels. Thanks to LTPO, the screen dials down its refresh rate to 60Hz, 30Hz, or even 1Hz if there is no motion on it, like while reading an article for instance.
ProMotion technology has been a thing on Apple products since 2017 when it debuted on the iPad Pro. It reached iPhones during the iPhone 13 lineup but has been limited to the Pro and Pro Max models ever since. Other OEMs such as Samsung, Google, and Xiaomi also offer 120Hz screens on their cheaper flagships and even budget phones.
Other than ProMotion displays, the iPhone 17 lineup is expected to bring Apple’s in-house WiFi and Bluetooth chips as well the company’s own 5G modem, moving away from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips. These will be featured on the upcoming iPhone SE 4 as well, which will reportedly be based on the iPhone 14 chassis.
As always, the next iPhone lineup is expected to debut in September 2025.
