Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc has lifted the lid on the reason behind his captain Pat Cummins’ recent success with the bat.
With Australia wobbling in the chase of 204 in the first ODI against Pakistan, Cummins looked right at home at the crease at the MCG, guiding Australia to a tense two-wicket victory with Starc as his partner. It was a performance that showcased his skill with the bat, proving once again that he’s more than just a world-class bowler.
His impressive display with the bat continued a recent trend—one that, as teammate Mitchell Starc later revealed, may be partly thanks to a corrective eye surgery Cummins underwent earlier this year.
“Now that he has got his eyes fixed, we’ve been arguing for a couple of years that he should be batting above me,” Starc joked post-match. “So he’s cemented that, I hope. It was a fantastic way for him to bring it home. We lost a few too many wickets, but it was a positive start to the summer.”
Cummins has started making a name for himself in the batting department in recent years and has managed to bat Australia out of trouble on several occasions.
While Glenn Maxwell was immortalized for his heroics against Afghanistan in the ODI World Cup, it was his captain who hung around for 68 balls against the likes of Rashid Khan and Naveen-Ul-Haq, showcasing his ability in both departments.
Starc himself shone on the night, claiming figures of 3-33 and earning the Man of the Match award while passing 100 wickets at home in the process.
Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc will be looking to finish the job in the second ODI on Friday and then turn their attention to the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India.
