Netflix is Replacing Employees With Generative AI for Game Development

Netflix has laid off staff and shuttered game studios, including its Los Angeles-based triple-A studio founded by former Overwatch Executive Producer, Chacko Sonny.

The company confirmed its gaming division is now investing in generative AI, aiming to “accelerate development and create novel gaming experiences.” This news adds insult to injury for those impacted by the layoffs and studio closures.

Mike Verdu, the Vice President at GenAI for Games at Netflix said in a post on LinkedIn:

I am focused on a creator-first vision for AI, one that puts creative talent at the center, with AI being a catalyst and an accelerant. AI will enable big game teams to move much faster and will also put an almost unimaginable collection of new capabilities in the hands of developers in smaller game teams.

The quality of AI currently used in game development remains uncertain. Generative AI art still exhibits telltale signs of its artificial origin, such as distorted hands or repetitive facial features, creating an “uncanny valley” effect. Whether these issues will also plague AI-generated game content remains to be seen.

Netflix’s plans for generative AI in its video game division remain unclear, especially since its potential is vast. Emerging generative AI game engines and AI’s ability to create concept art, voice performances, and in-game dialogue, among other things, offer numerous possibilities for Netflix which we will have to wait and see.

  • Just remember that wukong was not made from AI

Any game made from AI will use other games data and will be sued for copying assets ..

Netflix is making excuses . Ai cannot make a recipe let alone create a game . This was just to stop stocks from falling.
