Windows 11’s New Update Brings Compatibility for More Software and Apps for ARM PCs

A new Windows 11 preview build promises significantly improved compatibility for Arm-based PCs. Build 27744 features an upgraded Prism emulator with expanded CPU extension support, including AVX, AVX2, BMI, FMA, and F16C.

This breakthrough allows Arm devices, such as those powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus SoCs, to run previously incompatible x86 applications and games, including demanding titles like Starfield and Helldivers 2, and professional video editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro 2025.

The update also introduces a convenient on-screen gamepad keyboard for easier navigation and typing on gaming handhelds and touchscreen devices. This enhanced compatibility addresses a key challenge for Windows on Arm, expanding its software and gaming ecosystem.

Other improvements in the changelog include minor bug fixed for a number of things, the ability to detach hard disks from the Settings app, enhancements for the Task Manager, and more.

Windows on ARM devices have long struggled to gain traction, hampered by a persistent compatibility hurdle. Since their initial launch, these devices, promising longer battery life and always-on connectivity, have been held back by their inability to seamlessly run the vast library of x86 applications designed for traditional Windows PCs.

However, recent progress offers a glimmer of hope for a more compatible future, potentially unlocking the full potential of Windows on ARM. While challenges remain, these updates represent a crucial step towards broader software support and wider adoption of Arm-based Windows devices. As Microsoft continues to refine its emulation technology, the future of Windows on ARM looks increasingly promising.
