High-end Android gaming is getting a boost, not from new native titles, but through emulation. A recent video posted on X by @cozy_OSS demonstrates the power of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, running A Plague Tale: Innocence smoothly, a triple-A title released in 2019.
While the exact emulation software used wasn’t specified, the footage suggests GameFusion. Details on resolution and image quality remain undisclosed, but it appears visual settings were kept consistent across devices for comparison purposes.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite demonstrates a remarkable performance leap over its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The test running A Plague Tale: Innocence showed the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 achieving 24 FPS, while the 8 Elite reached an impressive 64 FPS – a whopping 166% increase. Both chipsets maintained 100% GPU utilization, indicating no performance bottlenecks. This performance boost is particularly noteworthy given the game was run through emulation.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite’s gaming prowess is further underscored by its superior performance compared to the ASUS ROG Ally’s AMD Radeon 780M in 3DMark Steel Nomad Light. While A Plague Tale: Innocence officially recommends a GeForce GTX 970 or Radeon RX 480, higher specs are likely needed for maximum settings.
It is worth mentioning that A Plague Tale: Innocence is not the latest game in the series. The latest iteration would be the A Plague Tale: Requiem, which was released in 2022 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, PC, and other platforms. It requires a GeForce RTX 3070 as its recommended GPU alongside an Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600. It would be interesting to see how well the Snapdragon 8 Elite can handle that game.
