West Indies fast bowler Alzarri Joseph has been handed a two-match suspension by Cricket West Indies (CWI) following a heated outburst that led to him leaving the field during Wednesday’s ODI against England.
Miles Bascombe, CWI’s director of cricket, condemned Joseph’s behavior, highlighting that it fell short of the organization’s standards of professionalism. “Alzarri’s behavior did not align with the core values that Cricket West Indies upholds,” Bascombe said in an official statement. “Such conduct cannot be overlooked, and we have taken decisive action to ensure the gravity of the situation is fully acknowledged.”
In response to the suspension, Joseph expressed regret, admitting that his emotions had gotten the better of him. He stated,
I apologize for my actions. My passion got the best of me. I have personally apologized to captain Shai Hope, my teammates, and the management. I also extend my sincerest apologies to the West Indies fans. I understand that even a brief lapse in judgment can have a far-reaching impact, and I deeply regret any disappointment caused.
The incident occurred during just the fourth over of the series-clinching match at Kensington Oval in Barbados, shortly after Joseph dismissed England’s Jordan Cox.
The bowler’s frustration seemed directed at the field placement set by West Indies captain Shai Hope, and in a visible protest, he walked off the pitch, leaving his team temporarily down to 10 players.
Although he returned to the field two overs later, CWI officials deemed his actions a serious breach of conduct.
