Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Quetta Gladiators has confirmed that Saud Shakeel will captain the team in the tournament’s next edition.
South Africa’s Riley Rossouw was the latest player to captain the team in the 2024 edition but a 50/50 record for the South African prompted the change from team management.
Saud Shakeel, vice-captain of the side last season, will lead the team next year after team owner Nadeem Omar confirmed his appointment. The decision will raise some eyebrows as Saud is generally considered a more classical batter, and his style is not suited for the modern game.
His expertise in the longest format of the game has already served Pakistan well but he is yet to break into the team in the international team for the shortest format of the game.
However, Saud has held his own while suiting up for Quetta Gladiators in 10 games. The left-hander has so far scored 323 runs in 10 innings at an average of 35.88 and a strike rate of 141.6.
If Quetta can build a squad around him for the next season, there is no doubt that Saud can lead his team to success in the vain of former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed.
Saud will be the fourth captain to take charge of Quetta Gladiators after Sarfaraz Ahmed, Mohammad Nawaz, and Riley Rossouw.
The PSL 4 champions will be hoping for a better season in the next edition which will take place after the ICC Champions Trophy next year.
