Rawalpindi to Get No-Vehicle Zones to Reduce Traffic and Pollution

The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has introduced a project to reduce traffic congestion and pollution in the city.

The plan includes converting certain markets into pedestrian-only zones, expanding parking facilities, and creating cycle and motorcycle tracks along major routes, particularly from Katchery Chowk to Murree Road and Faizabad.

This project, currently awaiting final approval from the Rawalpindi Commissioner, also suggests relocating the cattle market and transport terminals along GT Road. Additionally, RDA aims to clear encroachments around Katchery Chowk to improve traffic flow.

RDA plans to remove encroachments along the Katchery Chowk to Murree Road corridor (including footpaths) in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation. Dedicated tracks for cyclists and motorcyclists are also planned for Murree Road.

RDA Director General Kinza Murtaza stated that the rising number of cars and motorbikes in narrow market streets significantly contributes to traffic jams and air pollution. To counter this, RDA will designate busy commercial areas as pedestrian-only zones and expand parking in open spaces to accommodate vehicles.
