15,000 People Fall Sick in Lahore in Just 24 Hours Due to Smog

Lahore’s smog crisis has worsened, with over 15,000 cases of respiratory and viral infections reported in just 24 hours. Hospitals across the city are overwhelmed with patients suffering from conditions such as dry cough, breathing difficulties, pneumonia, and chest infections.

Major government hospitals, including Mayo Hospital (4,000+ patients), Jinnah Hospital (3,500 patients), Gangaram Hospital (3,000 patients), and Children’s Hospital (2,000+ patients), are seeing the highest number of cases.

Medical experts are particularly concerned about the effects of the smog on vulnerable groups, including children and patients with pre-existing conditions like asthma and heart disease.

“Special children are severely affected,” said Professor Ashraf Zia. “Over 10 viral diseases are currently prevalent in Lahore,” he added.

In response to the worsening smog, the Punjab Transport Department has introduced new guidelines. Light transport vehicles (LTVs) that emit smoke will face fines of Rs 2,000 for the first offense and Rs 4,000 for subsequent offenses.

Furthermore, the Punjab government has extended school and college closures to five more divisions due to the increasing air pollution. Schools in Gujranwala, Lahore, Multan, and Faisalabad will also remain closed as part of efforts to reduce the environmental impact on public health.
