A petition has been submitted to the Lahore High Court (LHC) requesting that Pakistan’s minimum wage be raised to $1,000 per month in response to inflation, reported 24NewsHD TV Channel on Wednesday.
The LHC Registrar’s Office raised concerns about the admissibility of the petition, and the case will now be heard as an objection case before Chief Justice Aaliya Neelam.
Filed by Advocate Fahmida Nawaz, the petition lists all four provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan, and the Prime Minister of Pakistan as respondents, a point flagged by the registrar’s office as grounds for objection.
Advocate Fahmida argued that the current minimum wage of Rs 37,000, established under the Minimum Wages Act, is inadequate given Pakistan’s rising cost of living. She urged the LHC to set a $1,000 minimum wage to better align with inflation.
According to 24NewsHD TV, the hearing was delayed due to the chief justice’s urgent case list being canceled, leading to a rescheduling. Chief Justice Aaliya Neelam will review whether to sustain or dismiss the registrar’s objections.
