Punjab Govt Announces to Hire Transgender Teachers

The Literacy and Non-Formal Basic Education Department has announced the hiring of matric-qualified transgender individuals as teachers for its newly launched adult education centers across Punjab.

Under the banner “Read, Write, Develop,” the program aims to provide literacy opportunities across the province, with 180 centres being established—five in each district, including Rawalpindi.

The initiative also welcomes male and female teachers, offering a monthly salary of Rs12,500. However, this amount has raised concerns about attracting skilled educators and maintaining educational standards.

Applications for the teaching positions are open until November 30, with candidates aged 18 to 55 encouraged to apply. The centers will enroll 25 to 30 students each, focusing on basic literacy such as reading and writing.

After a three-month session, participants will receive certificates recognizing their progress. The department is also launching similar programs in Punjab’s prisons.

Two centers in each of the 39 jails will train educated inmates to teach literacy skills to others, fostering education within correctional facilities.

Officials have described the initiative as a step toward inclusive education, particularly for the transgender community, while addressing literacy challenges among marginalized populations. By promoting employment and education, the program seeks to make a meaningful impact across the province.
