The Punjab government has announced an extension in school closures for another week as worsening smog has triggered a health emergency in Lahore and Multan.
During a press conference, Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb declared a complete lockdown in both cities on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Construction activities have also been banned until the following Sunday to curb pollution.
She stated that schools would remain closed, while colleges and universities will shift to online classes during this period. Restaurants have been directed to close by 4 PM, though takeaway services can continue until 8 PM.
The minister highlighted that smog has evolved into a health crisis, leading to the cancellation of leaves for hospital staff and the establishment of health desks. Residents have been urged to stay indoors unless necessary and to use masks if going out.
Aurangzeb further emphasized that the government is taking all possible measures to combat smog, including a new 10-year policy and immediate emergency actions spanning the next three months. Efforts include demolishing brick kilns not adhering to zigzag technology, but she noted that controlling smog is a long-term process.
She assured the public that interdepartmental teams are working around the clock to mitigate the crisis, with the current measures aimed at prioritizing public health and safety.
