Snapchat Will Let Parents Track Children With Automatic Alerts

Snapchat, once known for disappearing messages, is now becoming a location-based social media app. The app is introducing a new feature that lets family members share their real-time location.

This new feature, part of the Family Center, will allow parents to request their teen’s location and vice versa. Parents can also see their child’s location-sharing settings to ensure safe app usage. Additionally, family members can set up automatic notifications to be alerted when someone arrives at or leaves specific locations, such as their house or school.

Snapchat’s new location-sharing feature comes at a bad time. The app is currently facing a lawsuit from New Mexico’s Attorney General, who claims Snapchat has ignored concerns about child exploitation and other harmful activities on the platform.

The lawsuit highlights Snapchat’s disappearing messages feature, which could make it harder to investigate and prevent these crimes. While Snapchat isn’t the only platform with these issues, the company needs to address these concerns to protect its users.

Given the risks of location sharing, many are concerned about Snapchat’s new feature. The company is trying to balance user privacy and the app’s core features.

To address these concerns, Snapchat is making location sharing optional, limiting it to friends and family, and reminding users to review their privacy settings regularly.
