A significant power outage in Islamabad’s Blue Area has raised alarms over a potential citywide disruption of internet, television, and telecommunications services. The electricity supply to the area has been cut off since 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, leaving critical infrastructure reliant on backup power.
Nayatel, a leading telecommunications service provider, operates multiple data centers in the Blue Area that are essential for delivering data and internet services to its users in Islamabad.
According to a tweet from Nayatel’s CEO Wahaj Siraj, these facilities have been running on backup generators since the outage began. “Electricity of Blue Area, ISB has been switched off since 10:30 am Tuesday. Nayatel’s multiple data centers serving lifeline data and internet are located in Blue Area and working on backup generators since then,” the CEO stated.
The prolonged use of backup generators is unsustainable, and there is growing concern that they may run out of fuel amid road closures if the main power supply is not restored promptly. “Backup generators can’t supply power indefinitely. Please fix this ASAP else the city can face a complete internet, TV, and telecom blackout,” the CEO urged in his message.
In addition to Nayatel, other service providers in the Blue Area have reportedly gone offline due to the power outage, further exacerbating the potential impact on telecommunications services in the region.
Moreover, mobile data services in Islamabad and Rawalpindi have been unavailable for the past few days, leaving them with limited connectivity options. This issue, combined with the current power outage, has heightened concerns over a possible widespread communication blackout.
Efforts to contact the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) have reportedly been unsuccessful. “IESCO staff isn’t responding to multiple calls and personal visits,” the CEO noted, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
The potential fallout from a prolonged outage is significant. Internet and telecommunications services are vital for personal and business communications, emergency services, and media broadcasting. A complete blackout would have widespread implications for residents and organizations throughout Islamabad.
The CEO has called upon regulatory bodies and authorities, including the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), and the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), to intervene and expedite the restoration of power.
As of now, there has been no official statement from IESCO regarding the cause of the outage or an estimated time for the resumption of services. Residents and businesses are advised to stay tuned to official channels for updates.
