Latest World Test Championship Standings After Two Teams Face Points Penalties

The race for a spot in the 2025 ICC World Test Championship Final at Lord’s has become even more intriguing as both New Zealand and England were penalized for maintaining a slow over-rate during the opening Test of their series in Christchurch.

Both teams have been fined 15 percent of their match fees and docked three crucial World Test Championship (WTC) points, a blow that significantly impacts New Zealand’s chances of reaching the final.

New Zealand Face an Uphill World Test Championship Battle

While England’s WTC final hopes were already over despite their impressive eight-wicket win at Hagley Oval, the loss of points has been a significant setback for New Zealand. The inaugural WTC champions have dropped from equal fourth to fifth in the standings with a points percentage of 47.92 percent.

New Zealand can now achieve a maximum of 55.36 percent with victories in their remaining two matches against England. However, even with two wins, they will require favorable results in other fixtures to keep their slim hopes of qualification alive for the one-off final at Lord’s in June 2025.

Offense and Sanctions

Both teams were found to have fallen short by three overs after time allowances were accounted for. Under ICC regulations, sides are penalized one WTC point for every over they fail to bowl within the allotted time.

New Zealand captain Tom Latham and England skipper Ben Stokes both pleaded guilty to the offense and accepted the penalties, avoiding the need for a formal hearing.
