NEPRA Approves Lowering Electricity Rate for K-Electric Consumers

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced an 18 paisa per unit reduction in electricity prices for Karachi consumers under the September 2024 monthly adjustment, according to ARY News.

This reduction will be reflected in electricity bills issued in December 2024. However, it will not apply to consumers using up to 300 units of electricity per month, as specified in NEPRA’s notification.

Earlier, K-Electric had requested a reduction of 16 paisa per unit for the September adjustment and sought approval to refund Rs. 247 million to its consumers as part of the adjustment.

Recent Adjustments and Tariff Changes

  • August Adjustment: NEPRA approved a 40 paisa per unit increase in K-Electric’s power tariff. This increase, applicable to the August 2024 adjustment, will be charged in January 2025 bills.
  • June and July Adjustments: K-Electric consumers will pay an additional Rs. 3.17 per unit in November 2024 bills (June adjustment) and Rs. 3.03 per unit in December 2024 bills (July adjustment).
  • October Increase: K-Electric had previously announced an increase of Rs. 2.59 per unit in October 2024, adding a significant burden on consumers.
  • Quarterly Adjustment: A quarterly adjustment of Rs. 1.74 per unit will also be applied separately, reflecting the mechanism to transfer fuel price variations to consumers.

The notification highlights the ongoing adjustments in electricity tariffs, with varying increases and reductions impacting consumers differently based on their monthly usage and the adjustment cycle.
