Scrabble Legend Wins 2024 Spanish World Championship Without Speaking the Language

In a stunning display of linguistic prowess and unmatched strategy, 57-year-old Nigel Richards from New Zealand has clinched the 2024 Spanish-Language Scrabble World Championship in Granada, Spain — despite not speaking a word of Spanish.

Richards, already hailed as the greatest Scrabble player in history, has previously pulled off similar feats, most notably in 2015, when he won the French-Language Scrabble Championship without knowing the language. That victory left the world in awe and earned him nicknames like the “Tiger Woods of Scrabble.”

Now, nearly a decade later, Richards has once again showcased his extraordinary talent, proving his mastery is not bound by linguistic barriers.

Nigel Richards’ approach to the Spanish-language championship mirrors his strategy in French — memorizing an astonishing number of words without learning their meanings.

To him, Scrabble is purely a game of letter combinations and probabilities. His photographic memory and unique ability to identify patterns allow him to outclass even native speakers of the language.

Nigel Richards’ mastery stems from his unparalleled memory and analytical skills. According to John Baird, secretary of the Christchurch Scrabble Club where Richards began his journey, “He can look at a page and retain the whole thing like a photograph. On top of that, he has an exceptional ability to mix letters and see word possibilities that others miss.”

Nigel Richards’ achievements extend beyond French and Spanish. He has dominated English-language Scrabble for years, becoming a five-time World Scrabble Champion in his native language. Yet, it seems English no longer provides enough of a challenge for the Scrabble phenomenon.
