Subaru has claimed the top spot as the most reliable car brand in Consumer Reports’ annual rankings, surpassing Toyota and Lexus, which have historically dominated the list. This marks the first time Subaru, a smaller Japanese automaker, has overtaken its larger competitors in reliability rankings.
The rankings are based on a survey that gathers data from vehicle owners, covering models from 2000 to 2024. The survey addresses 20 common issues, such as transmission, electronics, and engine performance. Subaru’s success is attributed to its conservative approach to redesigns, which focuses on incremental updates using proven parts shared across its models. This strategy has minimized new problems and enhanced reliability across its lineup.
In contrast, Toyota has faced challenges with recent redesigns and recalls. Since 2022, Toyota has introduced new hybrid and turbo engines in its Tundra, Sequoia, and other models, which have experienced growing pains.
The Tundra alone has faced 10 recalls since its 2022 redesign, including a costly decision to replace over 100,000 engines in some models. Similarly, the bZ4X electric vehicle, related to Subaru’s Solterra, has received below-average reliability scores.
Subaru’s lineup, including the Forester and Impreza, boasts the highest reliability ratings. Other models like the Outback, Ascent, Legacy, and Crosstrek scored above average. The Solterra, Subaru’s electric crossover built in partnership with Toyota, is the only exception, with a below-average reliability prediction.
Despite its recent challenges, Toyota still ranks third, and Lexus holds the second spot on the reliability list. However, Subaru’s ability to maintain reliability through minor updates and its focus on proven technology has earned it the top position, signaling a shift in consumer trust and brand performance.
