South African spinner Tabraiz Shamsi has set his sights on facing Babar Azam in the highly anticipated upcoming series.
Shamsi, who has troubled Babar in the past, expressed his respect for the batter’s skill while outlining his intent to devise a solid strategy with the help of analysts.
“I haven’t yet prepared a specific plan to dismiss Babar Azam because I’ve been focused on the tournament in Guyana. But having bowled to him before, I have some ideas. He’s a great player, and once I return, I’ll work with the analysts to develop plans that benefit the team,” Shamsi said.
Shamsi, who opted out of a central contract with the South African Cricket Board to pursue freelance cricket, reiterated that representing his country remains his greatest honor. “Leaving the national contract was a personal choice, but I made it clear that South Africa always comes first for me. Playing for my country surpasses the importance of any franchise league,” he said.
He further emphasized his commitment to the team, saying, “Whenever I play, my goal is to contribute to South Africa’s success, whether with my bowling or batting.”
Shamsi reflected fondly on his experience playing in Pakistan, particularly for Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings in the PSL. “Playing for Lahore Qalandars was an incredible experience. They have a professional setup and a winning culture, having claimed the PSL title twice,” he shared.
He also praised Saeed Ajmal, calling him a major inspiration. “Saeed Ajmal was extraordinary. His ability to spin the ball both ways was exceptional, and I tried to study his craft closely. Our styles are quite similar,” he noted, while also acknowledging Australian spinner Brad Hogg as another bowler he admired.
As the series against Pakistan looms, Tabraiz Shamsi’s determination and strategic mindset will undoubtedly be key as South Africa aims to counter Babar Azam and emerge victorious.
