Apple Watch Ultra 3 Will Let You Text Without WiFi or Cellular Connection

Apple is reportedly gearing up to improve its smartwatch lineup with the Apple Watch Ultra 3, set to introduce satellite communication capabilities, according to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg.

This feature has already been available on the iPhone 14 since 2022 and allows users to send emergency texts and contact roadside service providers. In 2024, the Ultra 3 will take it further, enabling iMessage communication without requiring an iPhone, or even a WiFi or cellular connection.

Blood pressure monitoring is another feature Apple aims to include in the Ultra 3. Although delays have pushed its release beyond the original 2023 timeline, Apple is still considering integrating it. Instead of providing precise blood pressure readings, the feature would notify users of potential hypertension.

Furthermore, Apple continues to develop a non-invasive blood glucose tracker, but this technology is unlikely to appear in next year’s model.

Apple appears to be focusing on these innovations to counter a downshift in smartwatch sales. Revenue from its wearables division has reportedly declined over the past two years as users find fewer reasons to upgrade. By introducing features like satellite messaging and possibly blood pressure monitoring, Apple hopes to reignite interest in its smartwatch offerings.

In a related development, Apple is also considering a switch to MediaTek modems for some Apple Watch models in 2024. This would mark the company’s first major component purchase from MediaTek.

The new modems, supporting 5G Redcap technology, are tailored for wearables that don’t require high-speed data connections. These enhancements aim to solidify Apple’s position in the wearables market while providing users with practical and advanced features.
