Jason Gillespie Mulls Future as PCB Trims His Staff

Pakistan Test head coach Jason Gillespie is reportedly reassessing his position once again after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) declined to renew assistant coach Tim Nielsen’s contract ahead of the upcoming Test series in South Africa.

Tim Nielsen, who took on the role of high-performance red-ball coach in August, saw his short-term contract expire after Pakistan’s tour of Australia which was helmed by Jason Gillespie. While he had been optimistic about an extension, expressing confidence in the progress he was making with the team, the Aussie was informed that his services were no longer required.

Reports suggest that the PCB’s decision blindsided Gillespie, who was not consulted prior to Nielsen’s dismissal. This lack of communication has exacerbated Gillespie’s frustration, reflecting a broader trend of diminishing autonomy in his role.

In recent months, Gillespie has faced a series of setbacks. He was removed from the Test selection panel in October, reducing his responsibilities to a matchday strategist. Communication with the board has reportedly been sparse, particularly after Pakistan’s white-ball series in Australia, where Gillespie stepped in as interim coach following the resignation of Gary Kirsten.

Gillespie has publicly praised Nielsen’s rapport with the players, which he believes was an asset to the team. Both coaches suspect that Nielsen’s non-resident status in Pakistan contributed to the decision not to renew his contract. However, Nielsen had confirmed his availability for the South Africa and West Indies tours, a point that has left Gillespie particularly aggrieved.

The PCB has yet to name a replacement for Nielsen, but recent trends suggest a preference for local coaches. This policy shift was also cited in the departure of Gary Kirsten, who stepped down in October amid similar dissatisfaction over his time spent outside Pakistan.

Relations between Gillespie and the PCB have been strained for months. The board previously approached Gillespie to take over as white-ball head coach on an interim basis but did not offer financial terms commensurate with the expanded role. This refusal further soured their relationship.

Gillespie’s future remains uncertain. While he has not ruled out resigning before the South Africa series, the financial implications are significant. If the PCB terminates his contract, they may be liable for the bulk of his remaining salary, which runs until mid-2026. However, should Gillespie resign voluntarily, the payout would be substantially reduced.

Although the PCB reaffirmed last month that Gillespie would oversee the two-Test series against South Africa, they stopped short of guaranteeing his tenure beyond this assignment. Gillespie is scheduled to travel from Australia to South Africa on December 13, with Pakistan set to face South Africa in Centurion on December 26 and in Cape Town on January 3.

The PCB has made no comments on the matter yet but it seems only a matter of time before Aaqib Javed takes over the team in all formats.
