Fresh insights have emerged about Jason Gillespie’s departure as Pakistan’s red-ball head coach, suggesting that his resignation followed the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) refusal to meet his conditions.
According to sources, Gillespie’s frustrations grew after the PCB excluded him from the selection committee and turned down his request to assume head coach duties for both formats.
He also reportedly sought a salary increase, which PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi declined.
Further complicating matters, the PCB had asked Gillespie to spend more time in Pakistan, a stipulation he was not willing to accept. Similar concerns were voiced by white-ball coach Gary Kirsten, who also refused to remain in the country outside of active series.
Both Gillespie and Kirsten reportedly wanted their preferred support staff included, but the PCB did not comply. Jason Gillespie is believed to have previously threatened PCB with resignation ultimatums if these demands went unmet, ultimately making good on that warning yesterday, just before the Test series against South Africa.
In response, the PCB appointed Aaqib Javed as interim head coach for red-ball cricket. Gillespie’s departure marks the second high-profile coaching resignation in a short span, following Kirsten’s exit before Pakistan toured Australia. The PCB is expected to announce further details on permanent coaching appointments in the coming weeks.
