Ramiz Raja’s On-Air Remark on Shaheen Afridi’s Injury Sparks Controversy

Former Pakistan cricketer and TV commentator Ramiz Raja found himself under fire during the second T20I between South Africa and Pakistan on Friday, December 13, after a comment about fast bowler Shaheen Afridi raised eyebrows among viewers.

The Incident

The incident occurred during the 17th over of South Africa’s chase when Shaheen Afridi bowled a full delivery that Rassie van der Dussen struck powerfully back toward the bowler. The ball narrowly missed Shaheen’s face but hit him between the shoulder and chin as he tried to evade it.

Although shaken, Shaheen avoided serious injury and, after a quick check by the team physio, finished his spell. However, it was Ramiz Raja’s commentary on the worrying moment for Shaheen Afridi that caused a stir.

Raja remarked, “Just missed his face, not sure if it’s a good thing or not,” leaving many viewers perplexed and offended by the ambiguous and seemingly insensitive tone of the comment.

Social Media Backlash

The remark quickly drew criticism on social media, with fans questioning why there would be any doubt about the potential harm of a direct hit to the face. Many labelled the comment as ill-timed and unnecessary, overshadowing what was otherwise an intense contest between the two sides.

The Match Recap

In the second game Pakistan skipper Mohammad Rizwan won the toss and opted to bat first. Pakistan posted an imposing total of 206-5 thanks to opener Saim Ayub’s unbeaten 98 and a quickfire 30 off 16 balls by Irfan Khan in the death overs. Babar Azam contributed with a solid 31 off 20 deliveries.

In response, South Africa pulled off a thrilling chase with three balls to spare. Reeza Hendricks stole the show with a sensational 117, his first T20I century, while Rassie van der Dussen added an unbeaten 66. Pakistan’s bowlers struggled, particularly Haris Rauf, who leaked 57 runs in his four overs.

Series Outcome

South Africa’s victory gave them an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. The final T20I will take place at the Wanderers in Johannesburg tonight (December 14).

What’s Next?

As the series nears its conclusion, all eyes will be on Pakistan to see if they can salvage a consolation win. Meanwhile, the commentary controversy surrounding Ramiz Raja underscores the importance of thoughtful analysis during high-stakes matches, where every word carries weight.
