The recently launched iPhone 16 series brought only subtle changes compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 15 series. Apple chose to address user complaints and refine the experience rather than introduce groundbreaking design changes.
While this lack of significant upgrades dampened initial excitement, analysts suggest that the inclusion of Apple Intelligence, their advanced AI platform, could drive a major shift in iPhone adoption and ultimately propel the company towards a $4 trillion market capitalization.
Despite lukewarm demand for the iPhone 16 series, Apple’s stock price has climbed 16% since November, adding approximately $500 billion to its market value, according to ITHome. Analysts, including Morgan Stanley’s Erik Woodring, note that iPhone demand has remained “soft” due to the limited rollout of Apple Intelligence features. However, Woodring predicts that overcoming these limitations could significantly boost sales.
China, the world’s largest smartphone market, presents a unique challenge for Apple. Strict regulatory hurdles have slowed the adoption of generative AI features. Reports indicate that the company is engaging with local tech giants Tencent and ByteDance to navigate these restrictions and expand its AI capabilities in the region. Success in this market will be crucial, as China contributes substantially to Apple’s annual iPhone revenue.
While the iPhone business faces hurdles, Apple’s Services division continues to act as a reliable financial cushion. Estimated to generate $100 billion in revenue by 2025, Services could represent 25% of Apple’s total revenue. Analysts from Wedbush project this business unit will reach a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $1.6 trillion by the end of 2024, bolstering Apple’s overall market value.
Slow Rollout of Apple Intelligence
The rollout of Apple Intelligence has been measured, as developers face significant challenges in integrating generative AI into its ecosystem. This could result in the delay of key iOS 19 features until 2026, limiting the immediate impact of AI-driven advancements. While it remains uncertain whether these features will trigger an iPhone supercycle, the potential is clear. As generative AI becomes more accessible and refined, the company may see renewed enthusiasm for its devices.
