The concept of a truly bezel-less phone remains a dream, despite significant advancements in reducing screen bezels in the smartphone industry.
Apple has reportedly collaborated with Samsung and LG Display for many years to create a zero-bezel iPhone screen. Still, according to a new report from Korea, the technology is far from ready for mass production.
Challenges in Zero-Bezel Displays
Initially, Apple aimed to launch a zero-bezel iPhone as early as 2025 or 2026, but this timeline now seems increasingly unrealistic. The core issue lies in the technological limitations of implementing such a design at scale. Apple’s vision reportedly involves a flat screen angled into the sides—a design concept referred to as a quad micro-curve. Chinese smartphone makers have gained traction with similar designs, but Apple’s approach is different as it associates the screen of the Apple Watch with a slight curve that does not create visible distortion at the edges.
However, achieving this level of precision in smartphone displays has proven challenging. Apple insists on avoiding any edge distortion and maintaining a high standard for visual clarity. This stringent design requirement has further complicated the development process.
Potential Timeline and Outlook
The report highlights that even a 2026 release for the zero-bezel iPhone is unlikely. With the current state of technology, the dream of a truly bezel-less iPhone may need to wait until at least 2027. Apple’s meticulous attention to detail and its insistence on avoiding compromises in design or user experience seem to be the primary factors delaying this innovation.
