Aerial Firing Banned on New Year

As a routine measure, seldom enforced, the city administration has once again imposed a ban on aerial firing for New Year’s Eve.

Despite the annual announcement, the stroke of midnight on January 1, 2024, saw the port city echoing with gunfire and fireworks. Unfortunately, the reckless celebrations resulted in injuries to 29 individuals, some of whom sustained permanent disabilities. Police arrested 38 people for aerial firing and carrying weapons, despite the enforcement of Section 144.

This year, Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi has issued a notification reimposing Section 144 for two days, from December 31 to January 1, 2025.

The notification aims to strictly prohibit aerial firing and fireworks, directing law enforcement to take stern legal action against violators.

Authorities have reminded citizens that such reckless acts annually result in injuries and fatalities, emphasizing the importance of celebrating responsibly. The enforcement of Section 144 is intended to safeguard public safety and ensure peace as the city welcomes the New Year.
