Over 1.4 Million Babies in Pakistan Were Born Into Hunger in 2024

Climate-related disasters like floods and droughts are severely impacting children’s access to food, with over 1.4 million babies in Pakistan born into hunger in 2024, according to a recent analysis by Save the Children.

Pakistan ranked among the most climate-vulnerable nations, recorded the second-highest number of babies born into hunger globally among countries where over 20% of the population faces undernourishment.

Save the Children reports that a total of 18.2 million babies worldwide were born into hunger this year, amounting to 35 every minute.

While global efforts reduced hunger-related births to 14.5 million by 2018, numbers have since risen, reaching 18.2 million in 2024, a 5% increase from the previous year. Factors like conflict, displacement, extreme weather events, and rising food costs are reversing progress.

The crisis extends to famine-stricken regions such as South Sudan, Haiti, Mali, and Sudan, where acute malnutrition is widespread. The Gaza Strip faces imminent famine conditions, with 345,000 people at risk of catastrophic hunger.

Save the Children calls for urgent funding and humanitarian access to provide essential services like nutrition, healthcare, and clean water. Addressing root causes—conflict, inequality, and climate change—is critical to prevent further setbacks in global efforts to combat child malnutrition.
