Sharks Don’t Eat Submarine Internet Cables: PTA Chairman

Chairman Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Major General (retd) Hafeez Rehman on Wednesday reassured the Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecom that sharks can’t eat the submarine cables.

He briefed the committee that seven submarine cables, including the much-anticipated 2Africa cable, will soon be connected to Pakistan’s mainframe this year. The chairman said four additional cables are planned for the coming years to enhance internet capacity and reliability.

He also expressed optimism that more entities will start sending their applications to the regulator for registering their virtual private networks.

One senator raised concerns over Pakistan’s persistently poor internet speeds. He argued that the country ranks 97th globally in terms internet speed, and lamented prevalent issues like difficulty in downloading voice notes.

The committee called for input from the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Law to address these challenges.
