Aqib Javed Wants Expanded Player Pool to Meet Modern Cricket Demands

Pakistan’s interim head coach and selection committee member, Aqib Javed, has called for expanding the national team’s player pool to meet the physical and mental demands of modern cricket.

Speaking on the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) podcast on Thursday, Aqib Javed emphasized the importance of bold decisions to sustain competitiveness in an increasingly challenging cricketing landscape.

Challenging Schedule Tests Pakistan’s Depth

The national team is currently in South Africa, preparing for the second and final Test in Cape Town today. This match comes at the tail end of an exhaustive series that included three ODIs and three T20Is before the first Test.

Looking ahead, Pakistan’s calendar remains unrelenting. The side will host the West Indies for a Test series starting January 16, followed by a tri-series featuring South Africa and England. The ICC Champions Trophy, slated to run from February 19 to March 9, precedes a series of commitments that will keep the team busy through November.

“Modern cricket’s demands mean we must expand our player pool,” Aqib Javed said. “This requires taking brave decisions because, sooner or later, every team must do this.”

As a selector, Aqib prioritized rotation, giving opportunities to emerging players during tours of Australia and Zimbabwe while resting key senior players.

“Look at Pakistan’s schedule: England, Australia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and now West Indies,” he explained. “After that, the tri-series, Champions Trophy, and two days later, white-ball cricket in New Zealand. It’s impossible to rely on the same players for 12 months straight.”

“We need to differentiate, at least to some extent, between red-ball and white-ball teams to ensure players remain energized and motivated,” Aqib said.

Our aim is to create a system where players have breaks to rejuvenate and improve,” he added. “For example, after three months of cricket, they should have four to six weeks off for recovery and training.”
