Despite suffering from surplus power generation capacity, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) issued generation licenses to eight companies during the financial year 2023-24.
Out of 13 applications submitted, six solar companies and two hydropower (hydel) companies received licenses. The combined generation capacity of these companies totals 255.558 megawatts.
Among the solar companies, YDSA Solar Company was granted a license on September 27, 2023, with a generation capacity of 5.0058 megawatts.
On the hydropower front, the Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization (PEDO) received two licenses. The first, issued on November 30, 2023, is for a project with an 88-megawatt capacity. The second license, granted on May 22, 2024, is for the Medan hydropower project with a capacity to generate 157 megawatts.
