Pakistan to Include Saim Ayub in Champions Trophy Squad

The speculation surrounding Saim Ayub’s inclusion in Pakistan’s squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy will be put to rest soon with reports suggesting that selectors will include the opening batter in the preliminary squad despite his current injury status.

The deadline for teams to submit their preliminary squads for the ICC Champions Trophy is fast approaching, with the cut-off time set at midnight on January 11, 2025. All participating teams must submit their initial player lists by this date, ensuring compliance with ICC regulations.

Pakistan’s Squad Update

Pakistan’s selectors are reportedly considering including young opening batter Saim Ayub in the preliminary squad despite his current injury concerns. There was mounting speculation about his availability for the tournament after he fractured his ankle against South Africa in the second test.

Saim is currently undergoing specialist treatment in England with PCB expecting him to be away from cricketing activities for up to 6 weeks. Should he fail to recover fully, the Pakistan Cricket Board will have the option to request approval from the tournament’s technical committee for a replacement player.

Squad Changes Before and After February 11

Teams will have the flexibility to make changes to their squads until February 11, without requiring prior approval from the ICC. However, starting February 12, any alterations to the squad will need mandatory approval from the ICC Technical Committee.

Given the circumstances surrounding his injury, PCB should not face any hurdles if they alter their Champions Trophy squad and decide to replace Saim Ayub.

Impact on Pakistan’s Preparations

Saim Ayub’s injury is a significant blow to Pakistan’s plans, as the talented left-hander has been a promising addition to the team’s top order. The selectors are expected to monitor his progress closely, while also keeping contingency plans in place to ensure Pakistan fields a fully fit and competitive squad for the tournament.
