Toyota Hints at Making Over 600 Horsepower From Its New 2000CC Engine

Toyota is making waves in the automotive world with its new four-cylinder turbocharged engine lineup, described by Chief Technology Officer Hiroki Nakajima as a “game changer.” With displacements of 1.5 and 2.0 liters, the engines are primarily optimized for electrification while maintaining a focus on performance.

The 2.0-liter turbo engine has already been tested in a Lexus IS, showcasing its potential.

The engine gained further attention at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon, where it was featured in a mid-engine test car based on a GR Yaris. Early reports suggest it could produce over 400 horsepower, with estimates from 2024 indicating a peak torque of 369 lb-ft (500 Nm). During the event, Toyota’s CTO hinted that the engine might exceed the initial power target, further raising expectations for its capabilities.

This 2.0-liter engine is adaptable for both transverse and longitudinal installations, making it suitable for various vehicle configurations. A scaled-down version delivering 300 PS (296 hp) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) is also planned, while an unrestricted race-spec variant could exceed 600 horsepower.

These features position the engine as a competitive rival to powertrains from manufacturers like AMG, whose M139 engine generates up to 469 hp in longitudinal setups.

Toyota’s ambitions extend beyond the engine itself. Speculation points to this powertrain being central to future models, possibly including the next-generation Supra and potential revivals of classic nameplates like the Celica and MR2. The engine is expected to sit above the 1.6-liter three-cylinder unit used in the GR Yaris and GR Corolla, further cementing its role as a flagship powertrain for Toyota’s performance-oriented vehicles.

Lexus, Toyota’s luxury division, is also expected to benefit from this innovation. The engine could feature in future models alongside a rumored twin-turbo V8 in development for a high-performance car inspired by Toyota’s GT3 race car. Meanwhile, Lexus’s electric lineup continues to grow, with plans for a model inspired by the Electrified Sport Concept.

Toyota’s commitment to sports cars comes at a time when the automotive industry faces mounting pressures from emissions regulations and shifting consumer preferences toward SUVs. Despite these challenges, Toyota, through its Gazoo Racing arm, aims to deliver high-performance vehicles that rival offerings from Mercedes-AMG, Audi Sport, and BMW M, while potentially offering more accessible pricing. Lexus, meanwhile, will target the premium segment with its advanced models.
