Former International Calls Pakistan Favorites to Beat India in Champions Trophy

Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has tipped Pakistan as favorites to defeat India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, citing Pakistan’s recent successes and India’s struggles. Amir, who has been vocal about his admiration for Jasprit Bumrah, also highlighted the Indian pacer’s crucial role, warning that his absence could significantly weaken India’s bowling attack.

Pakistan enters the Champions Trophy with strong momentum, having secured historic series wins against Australia in Australia and South Africa in their own backyard. These victories have bolstered their confidence, particularly in overseas conditions.

Speaking on the upcoming clash between the two arch-rivals, Amir said:

Pakistan won the series in Australia and South Africa, while India’s morale is down. There’s a lot of criticism on India. I think Pakistan will defeat India in Dubai this time.

Amir also emphasized the pivotal role of Jasprit Bumrah in India’s lineup ahead of their Champions Trophy clash against Pakistan, expressing concern over the star pacer’s fitness ahead of the tournament.

“India would suffer a huge setback if Bumrah isn’t available. He’s been one of the top bowlers for the team, always leading from the front. Without him, the Indian bowling attack will be only 40-50 percent of its full strength,” Amir said.

Bumrah’s exceptional performance in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy further underscores his importance. Despite India’s 1-3 series loss to Australia, Bumrah claimed 32 wickets at an extraordinary average of 13.06, including three five-wicket hauls. However, recurring back spasms towards the end of the series have cast doubt on his availability for the Champions Trophy.

India’s recent performances have drawn heavy criticism, with losses in key series adding to the pressure ahead of the Pakistan match in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Amir acknowledged India’s historical strength in ICC events but pointed out the growing scrutiny and morale issues surrounding the team.

“India has always been my favorite in major tournaments, but right now, they’re dealing with significant pressure and criticism following their recent defeats,” Amir noted.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled to run from February 19 to March 9, promises another electrifying chapter in the storied India-Pakistan rivalry. India is expected to announce their squad by January 19, with Bumrah’s fitness and availability being a key focus.
