In an unprecedented move, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a comprehensive ten-point guideline document aimed at instilling discipline, fostering unity, and creating a positive environment within the national men’s cricket team.
Dubbed the Policy Document for Team India, the new measures come in the wake of a disappointing run of Test results and a growing perception of waning team cohesion.
With immediate effect, the guidelines by BCCI outline strict rules that players must follow, with non-compliance potentially leading to severe penalties, including exclusion from domestic cricket, IPL matches, and deductions from central contracts.
The Catalyst: India’s Recent Struggles
India’s recent Test woes, including a 3-0 series defeat at home against New Zealand and a 3-1 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, prompted the BCCI to convene a high-level review meeting. Key decision-makers, including head coach Gautam Gambhir, captain Rohit Sharma, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, deliberated on strategies to address issues plaguing the team.
The result? A hardline policy designed to tighten team discipline and prioritize the collective over the individual.
Key Directives in the New Policy
Participation in Domestic Matches
Players must play domestic matches to stay eligible for national selection and central contracts, with exceptions requiring approval from the Selection Committee.
Traveling with Families
Players should travel with the team for matches and practice sessions. Separate travel with families is discouraged unless pre-approved by the Head Coach and Selection Committee.
Baggage Limits
Players must follow baggage limits for tours:
-
- Long tours: 5 pieces (150 kg max).
- Short tours: 4 pieces (120 kg max).
- Home series: 4 pieces (120 kg max).
Excess baggage costs are the player’s responsibility.
Restriction on Personal Staff
Personal staff (managers, chefs, assistants, etc.) are not allowed on tours unless explicitly approved by the BCCI.
Sending Bags to the Centre of Excellence
Players must coordinate with team management to send items to Bengaluru. Extra costs for separate arrangements are the player’s responsibility.
Leaving Practice Sessions Early
Players must stay for the full duration of practice sessions and travel together to and from the venue to maintain discipline and commitment.
Personal Shoots During Tours
Players cannot engage in personal shoots or endorsements during tours to avoid distractions and maintain focus on cricket.
Family Travel Policy
-
- Partners and children (under 18) can visit players on overseas tours lasting over 45 days for up to two weeks.
- BCCI covers shared accommodation; other expenses are the player’s responsibility.
- Visits must be pre-approved and scheduled with team management.
Participation in BCCI Shoots and Functions
Players must attend BCCI’s official shoots, promotional events, and functions to fulfill commitments to stakeholders.
Staying Until Series End
Players must remain with the team until the scheduled end of the series or tour, even if matches finish early, to ensure team unity and bonding.
“This policy ensures players stay connected to the domestic cricket ecosystem, maintain match fitness, and inspire emerging talents,” the guidelines highlight. The BCCI also warned that exceptions will only be granted under extraordinary circumstances, with approval from the selection panel head.
The BCCI has made it clear that failure to comply with these guidelines will have serious consequences. Players could face exclusion from BCCI-conducted tournaments, including the IPL, along with financial penalties.
